Setting Up Extended Time for Online Tests
General
- Only tests administered in person and on campus may be taken in the DS Test Center.
- All Online tests not given in the classroom will be administered online by faculty.
- Students still receive their testing accommodations in the online test environment.
- Assistive technology accommodations: Students who use assistive technology (screen readers, screen magnifiers, etc.) should have access to these technologies on their personal devices.
Extended Time
If your students have extended time for tests, they will also need extended time for online tests. Unless efficiency/speed is the essential skill that is being assessed, students with this accommodation should be provided additional time for timed tests, quizzes, writing assignments, and labs.
- Extended test time is calculated based on the amount of test time allotted for the whole class.
- If all students in the class are given additional time as a way to accommodate the student with a disability, faculty are still required to provide the student with their extended time accommodation on top of that.
- The extended time accommodation does not apply to take-home exams where the timeline is longer.
Links to instructions for extending time in Canvas are located at the bottom of your student’s Accommodation Letter under “Faculty Assistance for Providing Accommodations.”
Students may qualify for 50% extended time or 100% extended time on timed assignments. This applies to in-person and online tests, quizzes, writing assignments, and labs where students have a set time (typically the class time) to work on the assignment. This does not apply to take-home exams open for 24 hours or longer.
Extended time is calculated based on the test duration for the entire class.
Scheduling with the DS Test Center:
In the DS Portal:
- Only report the in-class test time and duration.
- The system will automatically apply a student’s extended time accommodation to their individual reservation.
Setting up extended time in online test environments:
Extended time must be added to an online test by the instructor. Test Center staff do not have access to your Canvas course or other course platforms to make changes for you.
In Canvas, faculty must ensure the test start and end (until) times and the duration reflect individual student reservations with the DS Test Cetner. Student reservation times will be listed in the automated email reminders from dstestcenter@charlotte.edu and can be found in the DS Portal.
